It Girl: Emma Watson

My (guy) friends and I like to argue over whether Emma Watson looked hotter with long hair or short. I always vote short, but honestly, girlfriend looks pretty amazing no matter what these days. Its pretty awesome to see a former child star not quite stumbling around drunk and checking into rehab. With Emma, it seems like the best is really just yet to come (fashion wise, anyways.) And not for nothing, Emma's been the face of Burberry and has been involved in working with the Fair Trade brand People Tree. (Check out some fab pics of her People Tree looks HERE)

Coats So Hot, You Won't Need Pants: Burberry Fall 2011

Christopher Bailey for Burberry Prorsum, Fall 2011 offers up a line almost entirely composed of coats. This is unsurprising since the founder of the company, Thomas Burberry was known for his iconic trench coat, and because Burberry, as a brand, is so darn good at making outerwear beautiful.

Bailey presents many different colours and silhouettes, all of which are reminiscent of both the 1960s London look and the exquisite saturation and apparent quality that the brand is known for.

Jennifer Hudson's Grammy 2011 Red Carpet look

Jennifer Hudson was another red carpet favourite. She showed off her new svelte figure in a beautiful deep blue Versace. At the same time, I'd say its about time for Jennifer to bring this weight-loss to an end, because she looks amazing, but could seriously take things too far. (Read: Star Jones too far.)

Kelly Osbourne - Grammys 2011

I cannot believe I haven't mentioned how much I'm loving Kelly Osbourne these days. She is looking so fabulous! Although only a few Grammy red carpet looks are popping up online so far, hers really impressed me. Loving the lilac, which is helping to remind me that spring might really be on its way!

Fashion You Can Afford: Costa Blanca Spring/Summer 2011

Although I sometimes find myself perusing the Neiman Marcus website at 1am by cellphone light, or flipping through the pile of Marie Claire and Vogue magazines cluttering my coffee table, I do love to bring myself back down to earth by immersing myself in apparel I can actually afford to buy (without going homeless).

I love Costa Blanca. I cannot tell if the line made me decide that I want to be wearing light, dreamy floral dresses and faded denim jackets all summer, or if I knew that all along, and the brand happened to offer them. Either way, I found myself prancing around my local CB, trying not to buy anything (the whole Paris trip thing is turning into a bit of a money-suck), and lamenting "water, water everywhere, and not a drop to drink." Not to worry though, I've been plotting a whole host of get-rich-quick schemes to keep the shopping habit alive. And, as I said, at least Costa Blanca is fashion I can afford. In theory.

2011 SAG Awards

Elie Saab Spring Couture 2011

Is it just me, or do these couturiers have us floating on a cloud of beautiful? When I talk to people about my love of fashion, all I hear is that couture is something that no one could possibly ever wear in real life. Lebanese designer Elie Saab proves with his latest collection that fashion is indeed art that you live your life in.

Choosing just a few favourites from Saab's couture line proved absolutely impossible. Again, all I could think of were fabulous nights in Paris, Christian Louboutins, and impossibly elegant dresses to be whisked away in. What can I say? Why not look lovely in the city of love? A history nerd can dream.

These were some of my favourites but, as mentioned, the complete line is a must see!

Chanel Spring 2011 Couture

I recently learned that I will be spending 3 weeks in France/Belgium this summer. Since hearing this news, I have been constantly thinking of what I will be wearing. Since this trip is for an intensive 8-10+hours a day research/discussion of war and memory, I doubt I will have occasion to wear the fluttery skirts, ornate sandals and delicate florals I have been dreaming of.

However, what is interesting and indeed delightful about Karl Lagerfeld's latest couture collection is the seemingly effortless wearability of the pieces. The first garments are variations of the classic Chanel skirt suit, before transitioning into flowy, whimsical skirts and glittery tops. The use of sheer fabrics and light colours are reminiscent of Spring 2010 collections. Clearly the trend is far from over, but it is great to see spring collections of soft spring colours. Perfect for roaming the streets of Paris in June, impracticality and all.

Christian Dior-Couture Spring 2011

During the Second World War, the American government introduced a provision called L-85, which restricted garments to specific silhouettes. Hence, through the first half of the 1940s, fashions were often tube shaped (straight down, without flouncing outwards) or made of cheaper materials. This was to conserve materials for the war effort and to instil a sense of duty for people on the homefront. However, in 1946, after having experienced the Second World War in occupied France, Christian Dior founded his own fashion house. A year later, he designed a dress that celebrated the hourglass shape of women, with a cinched waist and full tea-length skirt. He put an end to the conservative fashions that represented conservative wartime duty.

With his Spring Couture 2011 line, John Galliano for Christian Dior channels the same hourglass silhouettes and the decadent lines of the late Dior himself. What Galliano has created is a line of beautifully saturated colours, wonderful feminine silhouettes and over-the-top elegance and artistry that we come to expect from a couture line.  This 1930s and 1940s inspired collection, in my opinion, includes some of the most beautiful creations I've come across in some time, if ever.
